Milk Carton Democrats

June 28, 2011 By: MattSDowling Category: Milk Carton Democrats, Ricardo Sanchez, U.S. Senate

There has been a lot of buzz surrounding the Republican U.S. Senatorial candidates who want to replace Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison. Michael Williams and Roger Williams have both switched from running for the Senate to running for Congress. Lt. Gov. Dewhurst seems poised to jump in any day now and Ted Cruz is receiving a new major endorsement every other day. However, the Democratic candidates are missing in action. To such a degree that Texas Democrats must be contemplating putting pictures of their candidates on milk cartons with the caption, “Have you seen this person?” After all, a person would be more likely to see their name on a milk carton than to see them anywhere else.

The best example of the missing Democrats can be found with retired Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez’s campaign. He filed paper work to run for the U.S. Senate nearly 2 months ago, but has disappeared since then. He has had no media coverage, no presence on the internet, and has no supporters rallying around him. I tried googling “Ricardo Sanchez” to find out more about him and take a look at his website. I found nothing beyond that he was considering a run for the senate and I gave up on the 25th search page, as I sought to find his website. Below I have listed some sites that are ranked higher than Texas’ top Democratic U.S. Senatorial candidate’s website:

  • A draft Ricardo Sanchez for U.S. Senate blog post… from the year 2007
  • A WhitePages link letting me know there are 37 people with name Ricardo Sanchez living in New York
  • Koi fish pond graphics by Richardo Sanchez(not the General)
  • An blog post by “Ms. Sparky” about how Richardo Sanchez sold his soul for $650/hr
  • Contact information for State Farm agent, Ricardo Sanchez, who lives in Michigan

This really concerns me that Sanchez is missing. Even though I’m a conservative, I want to do my part to help find him. I don’t want my democratic friends to get too lonely in the senate race. It’s not their fault his liberal ideals are falling flat with the people of Texas. Please email, tweet, or facebook  out the below graphic asking your friends if they have seen this person or any other democrat who is running to replace Sen. Hutchison.

By the way I finally found his website and it’s www.sanchezforsenate.com

Texas Blog Friday – Texas for 56

June 24, 2011 By: MattSDowling Category: Sharon Roberts, Texas Blog Friday, Texasfor56

After a two week hiatus Texas Blog Friday is finally back! If you are new, each Friday we highlight and promote a noteworthy post from a Texas blogger. We decided to start doing this not only as a goodwill gesture, but to help unify conservative blogs around Texas. This week we are highlighting Sharon Roberts’ blog, Texasfor56, and her two part post, Fascinating Presidential Candidates Speak at Minnesota Conference. I had the pleasure of meeting Sharon at the national RightOnline Conference this past weekend and can tell you she is doing great work with her blog.

Fascinating Presidential Candidates Speak at Minnesota Conference -Part 1

Three of the strongest Presidential contenders spoke at the Rightonline conference in Minnesota sponsored by Americans for Prosperity. The crowd was not disappointed.  Clearly the candidates have moved from the novice stage of campaigning to serious speeches.   The speakers were Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, Former Governor Tim Pawlenty, and Former CEO Herman Cain.  The crowd was not disappointed by the quality offering of information by each candidate.   The differences between the three are becoming more pronounced as they provide detail on their economic growth plans and ideas to get the economic engine pumping again.

In this first article, the focus is on Congresswoman Bachmann.

Here are a few highlights of the speech:

  • 1.7 Trillion dollars is the estimated burden on Americans due to government regulations primarily from the EPA;
  • The President promised African Americans and Hispanics hope and change. Instead, they are the hardest hit groups by unemployment. The numbers of people without jobs are 40% for the African Americans and 27% for the Hispanics;
  • Obama policies have resulted in the loss of 2.5M jobs;

Texas History X

June 23, 2011 By: MattSDowling Category: sitting ban, smoking ban

Texans are facing certain death in bars, restaurants, homes, and even their work places. Now that I think of it, Texas school children are even exposed to this deadly habit. Yet, Texas legislators are displaying a lack of urgency to address this problem and enact a statewide ban.

Now if your feeble little mind doesn’t know what I’m talking about, I will just go ahead and tell you. It’s sitting! Yes, sitting. A new study was released by the American College of Cardiology stating that sitting is just as dangerous as smoking. Sitting has been an epidemic in Texas and was even a leading reason to why Texas revolted against Mexico. Then again, you wouldn’t know that because of the liberal media.

Don’t believe me? Just take a look at the painting below, that depicts Santa Anna surrendering to the Texas Army, and tell me what you see.

Exactly! Every single Texan is standing except for two. Sam Houston is sitting because he was wounded(probably from all the sitting he had been doing all day) and Erastus “Deaf” Smith. “Deaf” wasn’t wounded, but you can see him trying to listen to what was being said with his good right ear. He originally came to Texas for health reasons and fully recovered except for being deaf in his left ear, hence his name. His health problems are most likely linked to second hand sitting in bars.

Many historians believe he knew better, but he just wanted to be liked. You see when he walked into a bar and saw everyone else was sitting, he would feel peer pressured to sit and stay. This is why “Deaf” Smith is the best known victim of second hand sitting in Texas.

This brings us to an important question: “Why didn’t our founders ban smoking sitting when it was such an important ideal to the revolution?” We may never know, but many believe that our founders decided it was better to let individuals and businesses decide if sitting should be allowed. Heh, idiots.

It troubles me that we are in the year 2011 and the people of Texas still have the choice to sit in bars and restaurants where sitting is allowed. The small minded person that said, “Give me liberty or give me death” obviously doesn’t realize that liberty means death. So I plead with my fellow Texans and the Texas Legislature to support a statewide sitting ban before it’s too late.

Which Texas Republican compared himself to Obama?

June 21, 2011 By: MattSDowling Category: Tea Party, Tom Leppert, U.S. Senate

One reason the Tea Party movement has been so successful and inspiring is because its members are strongly dedicated to protecting the founding principles of this country. They realized our country was on a fast track to self-destruction and knew in order to turn it around, they needed to strike hard and fast. Their first major victory was the devastating blow to they inflicted to the political establishment in November 2010. A record number of new leaders who actually believed in limited government and individual liberty were elected.

Now let’s flashback to February 2009. Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, now Republican US Senate candidate, was speaking to the Young Democrats of Dallas County and tried to convince them to support a new taxpayer funded hotel. Not only is it egregious that a mayor would be trying to build a hotel with taxpayer money, but Leppert was willing to risk an astonishing $500 million to build it.

Now let’s forget the fact that he was trying to convince a room full of Democrats that more government was a good idea. That’s usually a give in, like trying to convince Al Gore the planet is a little too warm.

Except this time the liberals even knew this taxpayer funded hotel was a bad idea. So in an attempt to curry favor, Tom Leppert pleaded with the Young Democrats to think of him and this hotel, like they thought of Obama and his omnibus stimulus package. Let me say that again. A candidate, who wants to represent the Tea Party movement in Texas, asked a group of Democrats to think of him as Obama as he sought to sell them on a risky big government program.

The Tea Party movement has fought too hard and come too far to leave it in such fickle hands. Don’t you agree?

Click here to find the story, in the Dallas Observer, that covered Mayor Leppert’s appearance at the DCYD meeting.

June 18, 2011 By: MattSDowling Category: RightOnline

For being at national conservative bloggers conference, RightOnline, I haven’t done much blogging. I’ve done a lot of tweeting,  just no blogging. I’ve been here since Thursday and I can only say that I’ve been impressed and encouraged by the direction of conservative online activism and the conservative movement as a whole. Every speaker and every blogger I’ve heard or spoke to has been looking forward not backward. We are ripe with new solutions so we can return to the ways of American exceptionalism. This has been a clear contrast of the left’s Doctrine of Apology and Blame that we’ve have all seen with the failure of Obama’s economy and a foreign policy that leads from behind and the occasional bow to a foreign leader.

However, this conference hasn’t been too serious and people like Andrew Breitbart have kept it light hearted. One example comes from a speech he have last night in which he said, “If you can sell things like jfreedom and liberty you suck. And by suck, I mean Suck!” Or his advice for dealing with the main stream media, “Be as petty as possible.” Ha!

Anyways, I’m currently listening to the likes of Michelle Malkin ,from Hot Air, and RedState.com founder Erick Erickson. I appreciate them letting me blog while they speak but I have a feeling they don’t care. Presidential candidates Herman Cain and Michelle Bachmann are going to speak later today and I hope to make some time to give you an outline of their speech. I want to see how their message has changed since the last debate.

[Update] Not only is Perry running for President but he’s announcing today (I reserve the right to be wrong)

June 14, 2011 By: MattSDowling Category: President, Rick Perry

[Updated] Well… Perry didn’t announce that he was going to run for President. However, if you watch his interview with Neil Cavuto you are probably more not less convinced he will run. Perry said that he is going through the “appropriate thought process” when asked about his presidential intentions. And then he let loose with the all important words that might as well be an announcement, “My wife is encouraging me to run.”

***

Right or wrong, at least we’ll know before the day is over. So, why today? Perry is presented with a very unique opportunity to launch his campaign (if he chooses to run). Let’s first though take a look at the speculation surrounding Perry’s possible presidential run.

Perry has gone from “I’m not running,” to “I’m focused on session,” to ”I’m thinking about it” (big leaps in political code). His consultant and former campaign manager have left Newt Gingrich’s campaign, which means his inner circle is at his disposal. Yesterday, pro-Perry web ads started running in the important primary state of New Hampshire. The ads were paid for by the Americans for Job Security and coincidentally the executive director of that group is Perry’sconsultant. He also recently courted evangelical Christians at a very publicize pro-life speech/prayer in Los Angeles. There have also been reports that some of his top donors now strongly believe he is going to run. I’ve also noticed, in my own communications with former Perry staffers, an odd change in tone and demeanor when answering questions about Perry’s presidential aspirations.

Now back to why today should be the day…

This afternoon, Perry will appear on Fox News’ Your World with Neil Cavuto. Here he will have a friendly national audience to make his announcement and tout Texas’ economic dominance.

Today is also the day after the New Hampshire GOP Presidential debate. He can go on as many talk shows as he wants and take steam away from his fellow contenders. This also presents him with a distinct opportunity to give the perfect and prepared answers that the other GOP candidates did not give.

Tonight, Perry will also be the keynote speaker at the New York Republican County Committee Lincoln Day Dinner which has two benefits: (1) He can wrap himself in his new found buzz and pro-business policies to hobnob with deep pocketed donors (2) He will also be staying in the nation’s largest media market which will help increase his national media exposure.

This Saturday, he is also scheduled to be a speaker at the Republican Leadership Conference 2011 and Republican Governors Association. He will be joined by a host of other presidential candidates and conservative leaders allowing him to truly contrast his successful economic record with his opponents.

What better opportunity could a would-be candidate ask for? There might not be one, but there is one catch.

Perry will take a hit if he announces during a special session but then again, what else is new? The effects will only be felt in Texas and criticism will mostly only come from the usual suspects. However, he will likely only announce that he plans on a run or that he has formed an exploratory committee. Not that he will be jumping into a full fledged campaign during session.

Did I mention I reserve the right to be wrong?

Do these ads prove Perry is running for President?

June 13, 2011 By: MattSDowling Category: President, Rick Perry

Politico is reporting that American for Job Security is running Pro-Rick Perry ads in the very important primary state of New Hampshire. Not to mention the ads are running the day that CNN is hosting a Republican Presidential debate. The ad it self isn’t very pro-Perry, but once you click on it that all changes. The text tout Perry’s loser-pays reforms in Texas and ask the presidential candidates to follow Perry’s lead to make these reforms a priority. Below you can view the ad graphics and the text that follows once you click on the ad. There is also an area to submit your name and email address if agree that loser-pays should be a priority in the presidential race.

Texas is leading the nation in job creation because of its pro-growth economic policies. In the last two years Texas, led by Gov. Rick Perry, has created more jobs than any other state. Recently, Texas became the first state in the country to enact “loser-pays” Tort Reform which reduces frivolous lawsuits and litigation costs, and allows for more expedient justice for legitimate claims which protects small businesses and consumers.

Loser-pays tort reform removes a harmful barrier to job creation and economic growth and would make states more competitive. This reform allows businesses to grow and operate without the constant threat of frivolous lawsuits hanging over their head.

In order to bring and grow jobs we can no longer afford inaction.

Urge the Presidential candidates to make loser-pays tort reform a priority.

The Mavs finally take home a NBA Title

June 12, 2011 By: MattSDowling Category: Dallas Mavericks, NBA Champions

If you are like me, you have been a Dallas Mavericks fan your whole life (and that’s no small feat). The Mavs have been known for their losing seasons and bad management for years. Even in 2006, when they first made it to the finals, they lost four straight games after winning the first two. However, tonight they won. They won 3 straight games. They won in Miami. They won the NBA Championship!
Awesome.

Texas Rangers receive heavy gun fire at border

June 09, 2011 By: MattSDowling Category: Border, Drugs

The Monitor is reported that a group of Texas Rangers received heavy gun fire from Mexican drug lords along the Texas-Mexico border. This comes one month after Pres. Obama visited El Paso and claimed that the border has never been safer. You can read the full report below.

At least three suspected drug runners were wounded in a shootout with U.S. law enforcement officials this morning in the Rio Grande just south of Abraham, according to sources.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, U. S. law enforcement officers participating in a multi-agency Texas Ranger Recon operation were fired upon from Mexico while attempting to interdict a large drug load, according to a news release from the state agency. An exact location was given.

A suspicious vehicle on the U. S. side of the Rio Grande River was seen along with two cartel drug recovery boats. Three law enforcement patrol boats arrived on the scene and received heavy gun fire from the Mexico side while attempting to interdict the drug-laden boats, authorities said.

You can read the full story by clicking here. A special thanks to Rep. Aaron Pena’s tweet for bringing this story to my attention.
